GUE/NGL strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, thus legitimising Israel’s apartheid policies against Palestinian Jerusalemites. Trump’s decision undermines the perspective of the two-state solution and the peace process. It shows blatant disregard for international law, the UN charter, and UN Security Council resolution 478.
East Jerusalem is occupied territory and the status of the city has to be resolved through direct negotiations on the basis of international law. Under UN General Assembly resolution 181 (1947) the whole of Jerusalem was established as a corpus separatum under a special international regime.
GUE/NGL condemns the ongoing massacre of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. They are protesting to demand their basic human rights including the right of return, which Israel continues to deny. The EU must put pressure on Israel to end the use of live fire against unarmed Palestinian protestors, which has claimed dozens of lives and caused thousands of injuries.
GUE/NGL calls on the EU to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement and supports the two-state solution on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
