This morning, High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini met with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Volodymyr Groysman, in Brussels. Ukraine is high on the EU’s agenda, underlined by the frequent exchanges on all levels, including through bilateral visits, in the framework of the Eastern Partnership and the upcoming EU-Ukraine Summit on 9 July in Brussels.
The High Representative opened the meeting by expressing the European Union’s full support for the work of the Joint Investigation Team in regard to the downing of the flight MH17.
Federica Mogherini and Prime Minister Groysman then discussed the state of play of EU-Ukraine cooperation and the wide-ranging reform process, as well as the security and humanitarian situation in the country.
The High Representative commended the work of Prime Minister Groysman’s Government to bring forward the reforms and the implementation of the Association Agreement, including its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area, which is already bringing tangible benefits to Ukrainian citizens.
At the same time, more progress is needed, in particular on the anti-corruption reforms. The expected establishment of the High Anti-Corruption Court, fully in line with the recommendations of the Venice Commission, would be an essential step forward, stressed Federica Mogherini.
The High Representative/Vice-President also reconfirmed the European Union’s continuous support for the full implementation of Minsk Agreements, in line with clear EU’s position on Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and commitment to its policy of non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol.
