The Polisario Front, the United Nations-recognised representation of the people of Western Sahara, has filed a new suit against the EU-Morocco fishing plans in occupied Western Sahara. The European Court of Justice has already issued two judgements.
The group’s new lawsuit against the EU comes days after the European Commission submitted a proposed trade arrangement for Western Sahara to the EU member states and the EU Parliament.
The proposal aims at extending the scope of the EU-Morocco Trade Protocols into Western Sahara. The Commission negotiated the deal with Morocco, but did not secure the consent of the people of Western Sahara, in spite of the EU court’s 2016 ruling explicitly stating this legal requirement.
EU member states are expected to vote on the proposal mid-July.
