The Dutch Green Party GroenLinks have been the driving force in ushering in the world’s most ambitious Climate Law.
Together with 7 other Dutch political parties, the law – presented on Wednesday 27 June – sets clear greenhouse gas reduction targets and introduces an innovative mechanism for an annual review to ensure that these targets are met by the Dutch government.
The Law is the world’s eighth actual climate law, but it is the most ambitious in its scope, aiming to reduce Greenhouse gas emission targets in 2050 by 95% compared to 1990 levels.

“The Paris Agreement was groundbreaking for the world. The Dutch Climate Law is groundbreaking for the Netherlands. For more than 25 years my party has been fighting global warming. Today seven parties, with a wide range of political ideologies, agreed on a Dutch Climate Law, currently the most ambitious Climate Law in the world.”
European Green Party co-chairs Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer said:
“This ambitious and bold move by the Dutch Green Party Groenlinks has raised the bar for climate action in Europe. The challenges we face to offset climate change are immense if we are to meet the Paris Climate Agreement. We urge other European governments to follow the Dutch lead and enact a binding new climate law.”
