The European parliament has voted in favour of taking disciplinary action on Hungary.

Commenting on the news, European Green Party co-chairs Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer said:

“Success!  The European Parliament has set an extremely important precedent after voting in favour of Article 7 that puts in motion infringement procedures against Hungary for failing to respect fundamental EU values.

“Orbán’s nationalism failed to secure the necessary number of EPP members for his divisive policy. By voting to initiate Article 7 and thus for our common European principles, many EPP Members have also taken political risks. It is a bold move that shows that European politicians prize principles above party politics.

“It also sends out an important message to all member countries that the EU is not prepared to compromise on human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights.”
