Poland’s black-market economy is booming. According to a report released by the country’s Central Statistical Office on October 24, as many as 880,000 people worked in the tax-evading, unregistered sector of the economy at least once last year.
This means 5.4% of the Polish labour force at least once worked in the off-the-books segment in 2017.
As reported by Radio Poland online, unregistered work was most common in gardening and agriculture.
In a report last December, the United Nations Global Compact Network Poland said that in 2017, the tax-evading segment had shrunk by 1%.
The off-the-books segment represented 11% of Poland’s gross domestic product, the United Nations Global Compact Network, which is a UN initiative that aims to encourage businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies, said at the time.
