The Green parties in the UK and the co-chairs of the European Green Party made the following statement in response to the on-going Brexit situation:
“It is becoming increasingly obvious that Brexit cannot deliver answers but only more problems. Even the Brexit Secretary himself, Dominic Raab has turned his back on Theresa May‘s deal and abandoned ship.
“The Green parties of these islands overwhelmingly back a ‘People’s Vote’ on our future. This Tory Brexit deal and the crisis within the UK government which it has caused only hardens our position that Brexit was never in the people’s best interests. It was simply a disastrous attempt to resolve an issue which has split their party for forty years but for which the whole country may yet suffer the consequences of for far longer.
“The EU has been categorical in its message to the UK that the door remains open. The opportunity still exists for this process to be halted and for the UK to play a leading role in creating a People’s Europe, rather than isolate itself in a nightmare of the neoliberal right’s imagining.
“The 2016 Leave campaign was based on lies and criminality. Of that there is now no doubt. It is unable to deliver on the false promises it made and the people of the UK must now be given the chance to decide on this final deal with their eyes wide open. We call on the Prime Minister to take the common sense approach and let the people have a say.”
