Statement by the Spokesperson on the conviction of Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo in Myanmar
Following the Myanmar’s court decision on January 11 to confirm the conviction of Reuters reporters Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo to seven years imprisonment the Spokesperson issued a Statement.
“The court decision is a missed opportunity to right a wrong. It is another setback to media freedom, the public’s right to information and the rule of law in Myanmar.
The ruling casts serious doubt over the independence of Myanmar’s justice system. The ruling is based on laws that run contrary to international human rights standards.
As during every hearing of the initial trial, European Union and EU Member States diplomats were among the many international observers at the appeals trial and followed the proceedings closely. The issue has continuously been raised with the Myanmar government, and we are confident that the President of Myanmar will promptly address this injustice and to ensure together with the government that the press can fulfil its function as an essential pillar of democracy.”
