The refugee and immigrant crisis which emerged five years ago revealed the deadly role the organise crime plays in the migration mouvement.
Until now, the Europeans were informed of the atrocities committed by traffickers in the Syria-Balkan route and of the ‘slave market’ in Libya.
But of the conditions of immigrants in Morocco little or nothing is known.
Nevertheless the northwestern Maghreb country represents one of the most active migration routes. Ceuta and Melilla, the Spanish enclaves in North Africa are fortified because thousands of African immigrants attempt permanently to enter the EU territory.
Now according to a study by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Morocco seems to be the worst place for immigrants.
The study, based on 1,341 interviews with migrants and refugees, revealed that 48% of the interviewed were victims of exploitation and abuse.
According to an article of the Spanish daily El Pais, quite half of the migrants who arrived in Spain in the second half of 2017 and 2018 said they were victims of physical violence, kidnapping, forced labor, arranged marriage offers and poorly paid work.
46% of the interviewed said they had suffered the most in Morocco. The immigrants reported having experienced physical abuse, kidnappings, stealing and assaults by human traffickers.
According to the IOM report, 8% of migrants reported threats of sexual violence, while 2,7% reported attempts related to organs trafficking.
