On 10 October 2023, Riga hosted political consultations between Latvia and Kyrgyzstan, at which the Director of the First Bilateral Relations Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Uldis Mikuts, and the Director of the third Political Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyzstan, Bakyt Djusupov, discussed a wide range of topics related to bilateral cooperation, including the enhancement of the legal framework and cooperation in international organisations.
Uldis Mikuts underlined Latvia’s interest in the strengthening of dialogue with Kyrgyzstan, and the need to further develop bilateral cooperation as well as cooperation with the Central Asian region as a whole.
The delegations of the two countries also exchanged views on the regional and international issues of current relevance, including Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine. The importance of close cooperation was highlighted with regard to preventing circumvention of EU sanctions.
In view of mutual interest in the promotion and deepening of cooperation, the issues related to the travelling and staying of Latvian nationals and EU citizens in the Central Asian region were discussed.
Previous political consultations between Latvia and Kyrgyzstan took place in September 2019 in Bishkek the capital of Kyrgyzstan.
