Speaking at a debate, Mariusz Kamiński, ECR MEP and co-author of a European Parliament resolution, called for the freedom of political prisoners in Belarus.
“I would like to pay tribute to all Belarusian political prisoners—1,400 brave men and women fighting for the freedom and independence of their country,” said Kamiński. “I hope that news of today’s debate and the resolution adopted by the European Parliament will reach them behind prison walls. Let it be a sign that Europe remembers them, that they are not alone. Let it give them strength in their fight for the most important values.”
Kamiński added that he hopes that the message from this Chamber reaches Alexander Lukashenko, “a thug who clings to power only through brute force and Kremlin support”.
“Lukashenko must be held accountable for his crimes on the international stage!” he emphasised.
