Parliament appoints rapporteurs to shape the post-2027 multiannual financial framework

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT

On Wednesday, Siegfried Mureşan (EPP) and Carla Tavares (S&D) were appointed as the new rapporteurs of the European Parliament for the post-2027 long-term EU budget. Their first task will be to prepare Parliament’s position ahead of the Commission’s proposals for a post-2027 multiannual financial framework (MFF), due by the end of June 2025.

The MFF is established for at least five years to ensure that the EU’s expenditure develops orderly and within the limits of its resources. It sets out provisions with which the EU’s annual budget must comply. The MFF Regulation sets expenditure ceilings for broad categories of spending called headings. Commenting on their appointment, the two rapporteurs expressed their gratitude to their colleagues for the trust they have placed in them.

“We will work hand-in-hand with our fellow MEPs to ensure that Parliament has a strong, united position and plays a full and active role in determining the size, shape and structure of the post-2027 long-term budget for the European Union. Without the Parliament’s approval, there can be no multiannual financial framework after 2027,” the two rapporteurs said.

“There are big decisions and tough choices ahead for the EU in budgetary terms. We will make sure that our Union invests what is needed where it is needed to build a stronger European Union and to make a real difference in the lives of its people. We will also ensure that our budget is far better equipped to respond to crises and emerging needs,” Mureşan and Tavares added.

“Starting today, we will be working hard together to ensure Parliament plays a full part in designing a revamped long-term budget for a Union in a changing world.”
