On 29 October, Deputy Minister of Digital Affairs Dariusz Standerski announced that the Polish government plans to allocate PLN 69.6 million to a plan to construct an Artificial Intelligence Factory in Krakow.
This announcement was made as part of a budget amendment. If the bill is approved, the funds will be transferred immediately to the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow and Cyfronet, a leading institution in the operation and development of High-Performance Computers and the Municipal Academic Computer Network.
The new factory will be established at the Academic Computer Center Cyfronet AGH.
In an interview with PAP, Minister Standerski stated that the planned Artificial Intelligence Factory will receive co-financing from the European Commission, which is involved in creating, testing, and utilising artificial intelligence systems.
While specific details about the project are still limited, the Minister expressed hope that the process will commence this year and reach completion next year. He emphasised that the ultimate goal of this investment is to enable Poland to join the European artificial intelligence ecosystem.
The Minister also told PAP that “What artificial intelligence really needs is, first of all, computing power, and secondly—data. When it comes to data, to data openness, we are already a leader in the world. And computing power is the area where we still need to invest.”
