On 19 November 2024, the Embassy of Latvia in Ireland hosted a presentation supporting Latvia’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and celebrated the Republic of Latvia’s 106th anniversary.
Ambassador Juris Štālmeistars addressed the importance of international organisations, especially the UN, in upholding international law and democratic values. He highlighted how Latvia’s candidacy in the 2025 elections represents a chance to promote world peace and resilience, reflected in the campaign motto, “Together for peace and resilience.”
The Ambassador emphasised the need to defend democratic values amid violations of international law, particularly noting that this day marked the 1000th day since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, inviting a moment of silence for the fallen.
The event also recognised the strong relations between Latvia and Ireland and the contributions of the Latvian diaspora in Ireland. It was attended by high-ranking officials, diplomats, researchers, and business leaders.
A highlight of the evening was a concert by renowned Latvian pianist Vestards Šimkus, which included original compositions dedicated to Ukraine.
This event was part of Latvia’s campaign for a UN Security Council seat for the 2026–2027 term, marking its first run for an elected seat. Membership in the UNSC is crucial for advancing Latvia’s foreign policy and enhancing international cooperation.
