The Prime Ministers of Poland and Canada signed an agreement to enhance cooperation in nuclear energy in Warsaw on 28 January. At a joint press conference with Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that this agreement with Canada will facilitate more intensive collaboration in nuclear energy development.

Tusk stated that Poland is on the path to establishing its nuclear energy capabilities. “We have just signed an agreement that provides a legal framework for deeper cooperation, which is crucial for both Canada and Poland regarding nuclear energy,” he said. He emphasised that the collaboration between the two countries will support the peaceful use of nuclear power.

Tusk noted the agreement’s significance for Poland, particularly as it seeks to develop its nuclear energy infrastructure, leveraging Canada’s substantial expertise in this area. He pointed out that the leading technology supplier for Poland’s first planned nuclear power plant, Westinghouse, is owned by Canadian companies.

Furthermore, Tusk praised Trudeau as a “proven friend of Poland,” highlighting the long-standing collaboration between the two countries. In a post on X, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that Canada will provide Poland with nuclear energy expertise to aid in transitioning to clean, reliable, and domestically sourced energy, thus phasing out coal from Poland’s national power grid.

Trudeau assured, “Canada, as a strong and reliable partner, is ready to support Poland in its nuclear energy initiatives, ensuring that Poland will no longer be dependent on Russian oil and gas.”

He also indicated that he would share details about Poland’s investment plans in advanced technologies in a few days, emphasising that the country is embarking on accelerated technological development.
