On February 12, 2025, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, President of the European Council António Costa, and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen met in Brussels, Belgium. During their meeting, they emphasised the strong relationship between Canada and the European Union (EU), supported by a Strategic Partnership Agreement and a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).
The three leaders discussed collaborating to enhance global economic security and stability. They recognised the robust trade and investment ties between Canada and the EU and agreed to renew efforts to advance and diversify trade.
They highlighted the necessity of Canada-EU cooperation, especially in light of Canada’s G7 Presidency, to address current opportunities and challenges in a complex and unpredictable world. Together, Canada and the EU will continue to support an inclusive, rules-based multilateral system grounded in the principles of the United Nations Charter. They reaffirmed their commitment to upholding sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders as fundamental aspects of international law.
As the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine approaches, the leaders reiterated their unwavering support for Ukraine in its resistance against Russia’s unjustifiable war of aggression. They also discussed developments in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza and Syria. They welcomed last month’s ceasefire and hostage release agreement between Israel and Hamas, urging all parties to implement it, and underscored their commitment to a two-state solution. Additionally, they stressed the significance of establishing an inclusive, Syrian-led political governance structure.
The leaders addressed global trade issues, including anticipated tariffs from the United States. They acknowledged other shared priorities and agreed to maintain close communication. President Costa and President von der Leyen expressed gratitude for Prime Minister Trudeau’s contributions and leadership in strengthening Canada-EU relations and upholding shared values and the rules-based international order.
