After a group meeting in Strasbourg on Monday evening, the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) Group announced that most of its members will vote to re-elect Roberta Metsola as the President of the European Parliament.
“Roberta Metsola has proven her commitment to dialogue and openness to balance and compromise, even when there are strong differences of opinion. She is able to build bridges and find common ground across political camps,” said Co-Chairman Nicola Procaccini.
“Roberta Metsola has many qualities a parliamentary president needs: She is pragmatic and consensus-oriented. Her commitment to Ukraine is also remarkable. These points form the basis of our support for her re-election,” added Co-Chairman Joachim Brudzinski.
During the meeting, the Conservatives also decided to nominate MEPs Roberts Zile of the National Alliance (Latvia) and Antonella Sberna of the Brothers of Italy party as their two candidates for the 14 posts of Vice-President of the European Parliament. In addition, they nominated Kosma Złotowski of the Law and Justice (PiS – Poland) as the ECR’s candidate for one of the five Quaestors.
The election of the President of the Parliament will take place on Tuesday morning. The election of the Vice-Presidents will take place on Tuesday afternoon, and on Wednesday morning, MEPs will elect the Quaestors.
