On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution taking stock of human rights situation in Brunei.
MEPs strongly condemn the entry into force of the Sharia Penal Code in Brunei that introduces the death penalty by stoning for consensual same-sex acts, extramarital sex and abortion, as well as amputation for stealing, for both adults and children. They express concern that while many countries are decriminalising consensual same sex acts, Brunei has become the seventh country to punish them.
MEPs urge the Bruneian authorities to immediately repeal the Sharia Penal Code and comply with international law and standards. In the resolution, they also call on the European External Action Service to consider adopting measures at EU level to punish human rights violations, such as asset freezes and visa bans.
The resolution on Brunei was adopted by a show of hands.
