It was with great sorrow that Caritas Europa learned this morning about the death of David Sassoli, the President of the European Parliament.
“President Sassoli was deeply rooted in the values that we share as Caritas, with a heart for the people who face marginalisation and exclusion and passionate in his work for cohesion and solidarity in Europe and globally. Caritas Europa is profoundly grateful for President Sassoli’s life and committed action towards the common good,” said Michael Landau, President of Caritas Europa.
Last July, Caritas Europa met with President Sassoli to discuss issues of common concern, such as the impact of COVID-19 on the people experiencing poverty, the need for a speedy global vaccine rollout, the role of social services during the pandemic and the need for safe and legal pathways to Europe.
“We have lost a friend and a great European leader. Our thoughts and prayers are with President Sassoli’s family and loved ones. Rest in peace,” added Maria Nyman, Secretary General of Caritas Europa.
