The Council of Europe’s Secretary General, Alain Berset, spoke by phone with Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze over the past 24 hours. Given the tense situation and ongoing confrontations, the Secretary-General expressed the Council of Europe’s concerns regarding increased polarisation and political deadlock. He urged all relevant parties to refrain from further escalation.
Additionally, the Secretary-General emphasised the importance of investigating reports of excessive use of force by law enforcement during demonstrations. As a member of the Council of Europe, Georgia must uphold the organisation’s values and standards, including the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The Secretary-General highlighted that this is critical for the well-being of the Georgian people and the country’s overall stability.
Alain Berset reiterated his commitment to supporting Georgia’s European aspirations and ensuring its democratic security. He also expressed his willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with all relevant partners, including civil society, to address the current crisis. The Council of Europe will continue supporting Georgia through its existing Action Plan, guiding the country on its European path. In this regard, the Secretary-General plans to visit Georgia soon.
