A member of the European Parliament, Katerina Konecna, has confirmed she will vie for leadership of the Czech Communist Party (KSCM) in the extraordinary election congress to be held in Nymburk, central Bohemia, on April 21. She will run against the current chairman, Vojtech Filip, aged 63, and 65-year-old deputy chairman Josef Skala.
Meanwhile, 37-year-old Konecna, has not indicated whether she will give up her post in the European Parliament. She said she will first discuss the matter with her fellow party members.
When elected into the European Parliament in 2002, Konecna was the youngest to become an MEP. She was only 21 years old.
As reported by The Prague Daily Monitor, the extraordinary congress is in response to last October’s general election in which KSCM suffered its worst election result in history. It won just 7.8% of the vote and its presence in the parliament dropped by half to 15 MPs.
