Czech Republic reaffirmed its vicinity to Taiwan despite Chinese protest over the visit of lower house speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová with a delegation of around 150 businesspeople from the Eastern European country.

During the visit, Pekarová Adamová spoke to Taiwan’s parliament, saying that “we are with you now, we will continue to be with you and under any circumstances.” Her remarks were welcomed by Taiwanese lawmakers.

Czech Republic does not officially recognize Taiwan and does not have official diplomatic relations, due to the One China policy pushed by Beijing. China maintains that Taiwan is a wayward province of China and objects at closer diplomatic ties and official exchanges between the island and foreign countries.

Chinese authorities objected Pekarová Adamová’s visit, asking her in February to cancel the visit. Previously China complained that newly-elected Czech president Petr Pavel had a call following his election with Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen, signalling a sharp change in Czech’s relationship with China.
