General Robert Brieger, the Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, said in an interview with “Welt am Sonntag” that it is beneficial for global security to deploy EU military forces in Greenland alongside US troops.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly said that the United States should take control of Greenland as an “absolute necessity” for global security. Politico reported on Sunday that he has refused to rule out the use of military force, which would shock all of Europe. On Saturday, Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One that he believes the US will take control of Greenland.

“I think we will get there,” he said, adding that the island’s 57,000 residents “want to be with us.”

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic Prime Minister Mute B. Egede have announced that Greenland is not for sale. Egede also said that Greenlanders “don’t want to be Americans.”

“Greenland is an overseas territory of Denmark not part of the EU. Nevertheless, Europeans, like the United States, have interests in Greenland. The island is of great geopolitical importance and also holds significant value in terms of security policy,” Brieger noted.”

In my opinion, it would make sense not only to deploy US forces to Greenland, as is currently the case, but also to consider deploying EU troops there,” the General said. “This would send a strong signal and could contribute to regional stability,” he added.
