Senate's decision was met with applause from Geert Wilders' far-right party.

Today, the Senate of the States General approved a bill that makes it possible to refuse permanent residence permits to people born in the Netherlands or who have lived here since the age of four if they are convicted of a serious crime.

The decision was met with applause from Geert Wilders‘ far-right, a significant development that has raised concerns among many.

The Party for Freedom (PVV), an ally of Marine Le Pen and thus a member of the newly founded far-right Patriots for Europe group in the European Parliament, promotes racist and Islamophobic policies.

After arriving first in the snap general elections on 22 November 2023, PVV entered a coalition government with another three parties.

However, the bill has a racist basis as do not consider that people born in the Netherlands are Dutch.
