The ECR Group will nominate Flemish MEP Johan Van Overtveldt for the chairmanship of the European Parliament’s Budget Committee.
If approved next week by other members on the committee, Van Overtveldt will preside over the committee at a crucial juncture in the EU’s budgetary cycle as negotiations restart following the European elections on the EU’s next seven year funding cycle, known as the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).
Van Overtveldt is a former Belgian Finance Minister and economist, spending four years taking part in the Eurogroup Ministers of Finance meetings.
“I am delighted to receive the support of my group colleagues who nominated me to chair Parliament’s Budget Committee,” said Van Overtveldt after receiving the Group’s nomination.
“The coming months are an incredibly important part of our funding cycle as we look to agree not only the finance available but also the specific support we are going to provide in, for example, investment and research and development. Negotiations with Member States on the MFF are likely to be challenging but I believe I have the necessary experience to help guide the committee and its members through,” he added.
The Budget Committee’s vote is set to take place next Wednesday in Brussels.
