On December 3rd, Sweden and the United States signed a statement of intent to strengthen cooperation between their special forces. While the details are confidential, the statement aims to enhance operational collaboration and develop capabilities within the special forces units.
“The current security situation has increased the importance of cooperation. The United States is an important partner to Sweden and the special forces are an important resource in addressing developments in our neighbourhood. This statement of intent will further strengthen our already good relations with the United States and enable enhanced cooperation,” says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson.
“Collaboration is our greatest collective advantage. This statement of intent is another important step in the deep relationship between the United States and Sweden, and allows us to strengthen our partnership, address regional challenges, counter provocations, and work towards our common security,” highlighted Christopher P. Maier, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict.
Special forces are a key military resource capable of operating in times of peace, crisis, and war to protect Swedish security interests. Sweden has previously collaborated with US special forces, including a major joint exercise on Gotland in October 2021, where the US High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) was deployed. This cooperation represents a step forward in US-Swedish relations. In 2024, Sweden signed a defence cooperation agreement and a strategic partnership with the US National Guard, enhancing national and collective defence.
