“The digitisation of our economy and cybersecurity must go hand in hand. A data economy can only flourish when trust in products, applications and infrastructure is guaranteed. The only way to do so is by taking a forward look and by developing a strong cybersecurity roadmap. The well-being of Europeans and the competiveness of our industry are at stake”, warned Pilar del Castillo MEP, the EPP Group Spokeswoman on cybersecurity.
Today, the European Parliament’s Industry, Research and Energy Committee will vote on a Resolution on the EU’s Cybersecurity Strategy. The EPP Group calls for more efforts in the development of secure and reliable network and information systems and infrastructure across the European Union. “We want that all Internet-connected infrastructure and products in the EU are secure-by-design, resilient to cyber incidents, and quickly patched when vulnerabilities are discovered. We also want better coordination between EU governments since cybersecurity is to a large extent also a national competence. In order to achieve this, we need to strengthen the role of the European Network and Information Security Agency. There must be no ambiguity and fragmentation in national laws on cybersecurity requirements for infrastructure, connected products and services”, said del Castillo. The Industry, Research and Energy Committee Resolution proposes 2030 as the target date for a number of cybersecurity goals. It lays down a number of guiding principles and recommendations on how to achieve these goals. The results of the vote are expected to be announced either this afternoon or on Thursday morning.
