Estonia and Morocco share a deep interest in innovation and digitalisation, says Estonian Foreign Minister

Republic of Estonia - Ministry of Foreign Affairs

On October 21 and 22, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna visited Morocco with a business delegation and met his counterpart, Nasser Bourita. The two ministers discussed strengthening bilateral political and economic ties between their countries, Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, and the Middle East conflict.

Tsahkna acknowledged Morocco as a valuable partner to the EU and NATO and expressed gratitude for its support to Ukraine. He highlighted shared interests in innovation and digitalisation and signed a joint declaration to enhance relations.

The two ministers also discussed security in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Tsahkna emphasised Estonia’s commitment to contributing wherever possible and stated that Russia has not renounced its imperial ambitions.

“I condemn all efforts to normalise Russia’s attempts at undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty and global security. Ukraine is fighting for us instead of us, and Russia does not plan to stop in Ukraine.”

Tsahkna said that Vladimir Putin and his accomplices must be held accountable for their crimes against humanity and aggression in Ukraine. He also expressed Estonia’s support for the UN’s efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Western Sahara.

“Estonia considers the autonomy proposal submitted by Morocco to the UN secretary-general in 2007 a credible basis for finding a solution,” he said.

Tsahkna highlighted Estonia’s support for a two-state solution in the Middle East to ensure Israel’s security and a stable future for Palestine. He emphasised that this approach is vital for lasting peace in the region.

Minister Tsahkna noted Morocco’s key role between Africa and Europe, underscoring the importance of collaboration in addressing global crises. He also met with Moroccan officials to discuss digital and cyber cooperation.

During the “e-connect” event in Rabat, Tsahkna praised Morocco’s progress in digitalising state services. Tomorrow, he and the Estonian business delegation will attend a forum in Casablanca.
