On Tuesday, during his address to the Members of the European Parliament, Kenya’s President William Ruto emphasised the need for stronger international cooperation to combat climate change, poverty, and conflicts. He urged the development of new forms of cooperation between the EU and Africa based on mutually beneficial strategies. He acknowledged Europe’s continued partnership and support to Africa over the years.
President Ruto drew attention to the weakening international solidarity due to rising living costs, fiscal strain, and migration challenges during his address. He urged the EU and African nations to collaborate on managing migration by addressing its root causes. He also emphasised the need for world leaders, including those from Africa, to remain vigilant about the risk of tensions and disagreements escalating quickly and with expensive consequences.
Furthermore, President Ruto noted the challenges caused by climate change and how it makes everyone equal in the face of a shared global challenge that transcends all divides between North and South, East and West, and developed and developing nations.
He stated that the political structures established in the 20th century at an international level are no longer suitable for current times. He called for a complete overhaul of international cooperation that would go beyond agreements that only lead to cycles of debt and dependence.
