The World Trade Organization released a report that sided against India and in favour of the European Union, Japan and Taiwan over import duties on IT products. The panel responsible for the decision called on India conform with its obligations.
The EU filed in 2019 a complaint against India over the introduction of import duties between 7.5% and 20% for several IT products. Japan and Taiwan followed suit with similar complaints. The new import duties cover mobile phones, components and integrated circuits.
According to a statement from the EU, up to 600 million euros of exports per year were directly affected by the new tariffs. The bloc is India’s third largest trading partner, according to the European Commission.
So far, it is not clear whether India will appeal the ruling. In case the Asian country decides to do it, the appeal will likely stall in the WTO’s courts as the organization is coping with US opposition on judge appointments, delaying its effectiveness.
