Today following the verdict in the Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Cambodia, the Spokesperson stated that “The verdict delivered today by the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia in respect of two of the most senior leaders of Democratic Kampuchea, Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, has ensured accountability for the crimes committed during the period of Khmer Rouge rule from 1975 to 1979”.
“The European Union has been a core supporter of the Extraordinary Chambers since its inception, providing over €76 million in funding support for the national and international components of the court and for its important outreach and education programmes. The EU remains ready to assist Cambodia in meeting its obligations in terms of democratisation, respect for human rights and the rule of law, and to support its economic and sustainable development,” the Statement highlighted.
