On December 5, the Federal Government of Somalia inaugurated the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) at the Somali Police Force’s Department of Coast Guard headquarters in Mogadishu Port. This centre will enhance maritime safety and improve Somalia’s emergency response capabilities at sea.
Supported by EUCAP Somalia, the MRCC will provide round-the-clock Search and Rescue (SAR) services and features advanced surveillance technology. This development underscores Somalia’s commitment to safeguarding its waters.
The MRCC will coordinate rescue operations with the Coast Guard under the authority of the Minister of Port and Marine Transport. EUCAP’s support also includes integrated training for Somali personnel to operate the MRCC effectively.
“By enhancing maritime capabilities, we are not only protecting waters but also safeguarding the livelihoods of people who depend on the sea for sustenance and commerce. This achievement is a success by the people and for the people,” highlighted Kęstutis Lančinskas, Head of Mission EUCAP Somalia.
Following the installation of equipment, MRCC is set to be operational by the end of the year. This aligns with EUCAP’s goal of enhancing maritime safety and security in Somalia while supporting the Federal Government in establishing sustainable infrastructure and legal frameworks.
MRCC will assist the Federal Government’s Information Sharing Network (ISN) by providing a comprehensive maritime overview and reinforcing regional and international safety efforts. Supported by the EU’s Red Sea Programme and the Djibouti Code of Conduct, this initiative aims to improve governance and the rule of law at sea.
Representatives from the Federal Government, including Hon. Hirsi Jama Ganni, the State Minister of the Office of the Prime Minister, as well as ministers from internal security and marine transport, attended the event, highlighting a shared commitment to improving maritime safety.
