The Iraqi Council of Representatives last night elected Mr Barham Salih as the next President of Iraq. The new President promptly nominated Mr Adel Abdul Mahdi as Prime Minister designate.
The European Union congratulated both Mr Barham Salih and Mr Adel Abdul Mahdi. The respect of the constitutional deadline for the election of the President and his prompt nomination of a Prime Minister are very encouraging steps.
According to a press release the Spokesperson stated on the election of the President of Iraq:
“The European Union trusts that Mr Abdul Mahdi will proceed with the formation of his cabinet as swiftly as possible and that he will bring the leadership that the new government will need to respond quickly and effectively to the many challenges facing the country and to the legitimate needs and aspirations of the Iraqi population. It is important for all Iraq’s political leaders to play a constructive and supportive role in this process in the interest of the long term stability of Iraq.
“The European Union will remain a strong partner and supporter of Iraq. We are looking forward to start working with the new government in support of the stability, security, inclusive democracy and prosperity that all Iraqis deserve.”
