“On July 4, the Finnish government nominated Henna Virkkunen as Finland’s national candidate for the European Commission. She is set to be appointed from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2029.
Virkkunen, a member of the EPP-affiliated National Coalition Party, previously served as the Minister of Public Administration and Local Government in Jyrki Katainen‘s government from June 22, 2011, to June 24, 2014. She has been a European Parliament (MEP) member since 2014. She has been a member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the European Parliament Committee on Transport and Tourism since 2021. In 2022, she joined the European Parliament Committee of Inquiry to investigate the use of Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware.
