Iberdrola and Amazon further expand their global renewable energy partnership and harness the AWS cloud to scale Iberdrola’s business.

Amazon and Iberdrola have announced an additional 476 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs), expanding their global partnership into five countries. This includes Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal for 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, set to begin construction in early 2025, and two PPAs in Spain totalling 257 MW of solar and wind energy. These projects will collectively produce approximately 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity annually to power around 300,000 homes.

Initially formed in 2022, the partnership allows further collaboration on projects in new and existing markets. Amazon has contracted over 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola.

“With Amazon we have a partnership that truly matches our own commitment to develop sustainable energy and drive the energy transition forward around the world. With Iberdrola’s extensive global portfolio of renewables, we are continually seeking to expand such partnerships, to accelerate decarbonisation and support businesses in reaching their climate goals,” explained Aitor Moso Raigoso, Executive Vice President Customer Business at Iberdrola.

In August 2024, Iberdrola selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its preferred cloud provider for generative artificial intelligence workloads.

“Additionally, the AI technology that AWS is helping to integrate into our business is already delivering tangible results in terms of enabling our renewable energy assets to be even more efficient and helping the smart grid networks that we operate to be even more flexible and reliable,” Aitor Moso Raigoso added.

This collaboration aims to improve grid connection processes and enhance wind farm design using AWS’s computational capabilities. In 2025, plans include developing a Virtual Desktop as a Service platform and migrating critical workloads to the AWS Region in Spain.

“We are excited to further support Iberdrola in its growth plans, leveraging the scalability and services of AWS in data and AI. We are working with Iberdrola to provide a modern virtual desktop platform for their employees and drive innovation across business lines to accelerate innovation and delivery, and achieve our goals faster,” Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, said.

In particular, Amazon has contracted 219 MW from Portugal’s Tâmega Wind Complex, the country’s largest green hybridisation project. This initiative, backed by Iberdrola with a €350 million investment, aims to power about 128,000 households annually and create over 700 jobs at peak construction.

Additionally, Amazon will purchase 212 MW from the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca, which will supply energy for around 150,000 homes and support over 800 jobs during peak construction. Iberdrola is also committed to restoring the Plaza Amayuelas town square for the local community.

Furthermore, Amazon will acquire 45 MW from the Valdemoro Wind Farm in Burgos, which has an installed capacity of 49.5 MW and can power about 48,000 households. This project will create 145 jobs at peak construction, with 40% filled by local contractors.

These renewable energy PPAs are part of Amazon’s goal of using 100% renewable energy and achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. With over 600 renewable projects globally, Amazon has been named the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy. At the same time, Iberdrola is the top seller of PPAs in Europe for the second year in a row, according to Pexapark.
