“The European Commission should review its administrative procedure for the appointment of senior officials to ensure transparency, integrity and equal opportunities by the end of the year”, said Inge Gräßle MEP, Chairwoman of the European Parliament’s Budgetary Control Committee.
Gräßle regrets that the appointment of the new Secretary-General of the European Commission was conducted in a way that aroused disapproval in public opinion, but stresses that the committee did not find a legal basis for the Parliament to ask for his resignation.
“We must respect the law. No matter how discontent we might be about the process, stable and correctly interpreted legislation gives the necessary certainty to every administration. That same legislation also expects us to respect the autonomy of the European Institutions.”
“The Commission must now take the next steps and should conduct open and transparent application procedures in the future”, concluded Gräßle.
