State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, Ingrid Brocková, held talks with Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Deng Li in Beijing on 22 May 2023 on mutual relations. The talks focused on economic cooperation and a number of global issues and topics, including Russia’s war against Ukraine and cooperation with Taiwan.
“As a supporter of the UN Charter and a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China should condemn Russia’s aggression against Ukraine as a clear violation of international law. Although China has not yet clearly identified the culprit and victim of this aggression, it should use its influence on Russia to ensure a just peace in Ukraine in accordance with its freedom, sovereignty and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders,” said Ingrid Brocková.
She underlined the importance the European Union attaches to cooperation with China, including dialogue on human rights issues. In this context, the State Secretary reiterated her position that Chinese sanctions against EU institutions, members of the European Parliament, including the Slovak MEP Ms Miriam Lexmann, were unjustified.
On the issue of Taiwan, as the State Secretary recalled, Slovakia pursues a pragmatic and balanced approach that respects the “one China” policy. Brocková pointed out that all parties must respect the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. She described a military solution to the dispute as unacceptable.
