The President of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García, will visit the areas of Thessaly affected by the floods on Monday, September 18, together with the President of Pasok Kinal Nikos Androulakis and S&D MEP of Pasok Kinal Nikos Papandreou.
The delegation will examine and propose financial resources to address the impacts of the floods and the reconstruction of the affected regions.
“Greece has been hit this summer first by unprecedented fires, and then with terrible floods. I want to show my solidarity to the Greek people. Together with my Pasok Kinal colleagues, we want to observe the situation on the ground, to fully understand the extent of the damage, and to hear first-hand from the residents their needs and concerns. We want to do our utmost to ensure that aid from the European Union is provided efficiently and targeted to the needs of those affected,” said Iratxe García.
“We have great challenges ahead of us, such as the immediate assistance to the affected people and the reconstruction of the region. At the same time, we need to formulate a comprehensive plan of adaption to the new challenges of climate change and of resilience to an increasingly uncertain future,” added Nikos Papandreou.
