On 8 June, the Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Antonio Tajani, met the Interim Prime Minister of Libya’s unity government, Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
During the meeting, which was attended by a delegation of Libyan ministers, the main issues of political, economic, migration and energy cooperation were discussed.
Deputy Prime Minister Tajani reiterated Italy’s full support for the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections and for UN mediation as fundamental steps on the path to stabilising Libya.
“We must work together to ensure the institutional and geographical unity of Libya, which is an indispensable pillar for the stability of the Mediterranean”, stressed the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Tajani also dwelt on the need for more effective cooperation on migration issues.
“Italy and Libya must work side by side in the fight against human trafficking and stop irregular departures”. To do this, “it is necessary to ensure strong European support and stable cooperation with UN agencies”.
Tajani and Dbeibah also discussed political and economic stability in the region.
The Italian Deputy Prime Minister also offered the collaboration of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its structures in charge of exports and foreign trade to deepen cooperation in the economic and commercial sphere.
“We will immediately have a joint commission at work to promote the presence of small and medium-sized Italian enterprises in Libya. We will quickly organise a business forum in Tripoli and strengthen cooperation in all sectors, starting with healthcare and renewable energy”.
Tajani and Dbeibah also agreed on Libya’s leading role in Italian and European energy security, hoping for an increase in Italian investments in the country.
