Unemployed people in Bulgaria, often with low social and educational backgrounds, come to Sweden after being invited by friends or finding opportunities on the Internet. They are promised work in construction or fruit-picking with unrealistically high wages. However, upon arrival, they are subjected to harsh living conditions and receive very low or no pay; the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA) reports a warning from the Labour Inspectorate.

The Bulgarian Embassy in Stockholm has warned about a significant increase in cases of Bulgarian citizens cheating by promising to work in Sweden during the summer season. Bulgaria’s Executive Agency, “Main Labour Inspectorate” (GIT), released this information.

The GIT is reminding people seeking work abroad that they should always have a written document detailing their work and pay terms. This includes details about their remuneration, working hours, paid leave, and other relevant information. This practice will empower them and protect their rights.
