Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn has called on the European Union to trigger Article 7 proceedings against Hungary. He also likened the Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban to a dictator.
According to Der Tagesspiegel, Luxembourg’s foreign affairs minister reacted sharply to Orban’s announcement that he would close down refugee organisations in his country: “This attitude fits a dictator, for whom staying in power is more important than any political and moral decency.”
As reported by Delano online, Asselborn said that Orban’s statements should lead to the triggering of Article 7, the sanctions procedure that the European Union set up in case a member state persistently breaches the EU’s founding values of democracy, freedom, the rule of law, equality, respect for human dignity and respect for human rights.
“The EU must stand up and revolt,” said Asselborn.
