During her official visit to France, Maia Sandu, the President of Moldova, met with French President Emmanuel Macron. The French President emphasised that Moldova is confronting escalating and overt attempts by Russia to destabilise the country.
“Always a pleasure to be back at the @Elysee with @EmmanuelMacron, reaffirming our shared vision for a strong, united, and peaceful Europe. Here to discuss Moldova’s security, peace in Ukraine, EU enlargement and projects delivering real benefits to our people. Merci, la France!” President Sandu posted on X.
The two leaders signed a social security agreement, secured an energy efficiency loan from Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and committed to collaborating in the fight against disinformation.
“The Moldova-France partnership delivers concrete results for our citizens,” stressed Maia Sandu. “Grateful, as always, for France’s steadfast support.”
Moldova aims to join the European Union by 2030. However, its proximity to Ukraine makes it a target for Russia’s renewed aggression in the region. President Macron pointed out that Russian drones and missiles frequently violate Moldova’s airspace, and the country is experiencing increasingly unrestrained efforts from Russia to undermine its democratic institutions.
“Dear Maia, France stands with Moldova to support the Moldovan people in fulfilling their European aspirations and to build together a safer and stronger Europe, free to choose its own destiny,” the French President said during a press conference alongside his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu.
