On Tuesday, Parliament endorsed Ms Iliana Ivanova, the current EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth, as Bulgaria’s member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA). According to the EU Treaty, each member state proposes a candidate to serve on the ECA. The Council of the EU, after consulting the European Parliament, adopts the list of members for a six-year term.
Ms. Ivanova holds a Master’s degree in International Economic Relations and previously served as Bulgaria’s member of the ECA from 2013 to 2023. Her nomination received substantial support, with 581 votes in favour, 34 against, and 31 abstentions.
The position of Bulgarian ECA member became vacant in September 2023 when Ms Ivanova was appointed as an EU Commissioner. On September 4, 2024, the Bulgarian Council of Ministers nominated her to return to the ECA for 2025–2030. EU member states will make the final decision in the Council.
