The Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group of the EP Civil Liberties Committee declares the assassination attempt an attack on the rule of law.
The Democracy, Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group (DRFMG) is shocked to learn about the bomb attack on the Prosecutor General in Bulgaria on May 1. Although much remains to be clarified as to the exact circumstances of the attack, the DRFMG considers this attack on the person and the office of the Prosecutor a matter that directly affects the rule of law. Institutions need to be able to function without intimidation in a democratic state.
The DRFMG welcomes the swift launch of an investigation into this attack by the Bulgarian authorities. Given the severity, the complexity and the specialised expertise needed to clarify the circumstances and identify the perpetrators, the DRFMG welcomes the request made by the Bulgarian authorities for the involvement of Europol in the investigations and strongly urges the authorities to seek all international support necessary to conduct swift and transparent investigations.
As part of its ongoing monitoring exercise of the situation in Bulgaria, the DRFMG will remain in close contact with the Bulgarian government.
