Civil Liberties Committee delegation will travel to Warsaw from 19 to 20 June for meetings with senior officials of Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex).
A delegation of the Civil Liberties Committee led by Lena Düpont (EPP, Germany), Head of the Delegation, with Theresa Bielowski (S&D, Austria) and Erik Marquardt (Greens, Germany), will visit Frontex Agency in Warsaw, from 19 to 20 June.
MEPs will meet with Hans Leijtens, Frontex Executive Director and other high-level officials of the agency and visit the Coordination Centre for operations and Situation Centre. They will participate in the Frontex Management Board meeting and will have a working lunch with Fundamental Rights Officer, Data Protection Officer and Consultative Forum representatives.
Civil Liberties Committee Working Group on Frontex Scrutiny (FSWG), Chaired by Lena Düpont (EPP, DE) has been created following a decision by the Civil Liberties committee coordinators on 29 January 2021. In line with its mandate it monitors all aspects of the functioning of Frontex and the correct application of the relevant EU legislation, in particular the European Border and Coast Guard regulation. Its work focuses, in particular, on the compliance of Frontex with fundamental rights, its internal management, reporting procedures and handling of complaints, as well as on the transparency and accountability of Frontex towards the European Parliament.
In July 2021, the FSWG finished a 4 month fact-finding investigation about the alleged fundamental rights violations in the work of the border agency. The report, drafted by Tineke STRIK (Greens, NL), was discussed in the Civil Liberties Committee. The committee is currently working on a resolution on Frontex building on the fact-finding investigation of the LIBE Working Group for Frontex Scrutiny.
