"In an evolving geopolitical landscape, the EU is acting as a strategic, coherent, and credible partner for a stable and prosperous future rooted in mutual respect, growth, and stronger connections," stated Dubravka Šuica, Commissioner for Mediterranean.

Following President Ursula von der Leyen’s call for a more focused approach to the EU’s broader neighbourhood, particularly in the Mediterranean, the European Commission established a new Directorate-General dedicated to this portfolio. The new Directorate-General for the Middle East, North Africa, and the Gulf (DG MENA) was announced by President von der Leyen during the College of Commissioners presentation in September 2024.

In line with the President’s Political Guidelines and the Mission Letter of the Commissioner for the Mediterranean, Dubravka Šuica, this new DG will build strong partnerships with North Africa, the Middle East, and Gulf countries, focusing on mutual prosperity, security, and resilience. DG MENA will promote investments, economic stability, job creation, energy cooperation, transportation, security, migration, and other areas of mutual interest.

“The Mediterranean has always been a cultural bridge and strategic route where common histories and traditions have shaped our European identity. The creation of the new Directorate-General MENA marks a pivotal moment, which brings renewed relevance and innovation to the EU policy towards the Mediterranean and the Gulf. This new Commission’s department will be fully dedicated to address the unique opportunities and challenges of the region – bringing together the different shores of our Mare Nostrum and beyond. In an evolving geopolitical landscape, the EU is acting as a strategic, coherent, and credible partner for a stable and prosperous future rooted in mutual respect, growth, and stronger connections,” stated Dubravka Šuica, Commissioner for Mediterranean.

Under the leadership of Commissioner Šuica, DG MENA will serve as the primary entry point for the European Commission regarding all countries in the region. The Directorate-General will help drive and shape the EU Mediterranean policy’s goals, providing technical and financial support. With over 500 staff members in the European headquarters and EU Delegations, DG MENA represents a significant innovation as it is fully dedicated to the Mediterranean region, encompassing North Africa, the Middle East, and the Gulf countries.
