Orange Romania has signed a 10-year virtual Power Purchase Agreement (vPPA) with ENGIE Romania to purchase approximately 40 GWh of renewable energy annually. This green energy will come from one of ENGIE’s wind farms, reinforcing their long-standing partnership.
ENGIE, a leader in low-carbon energy, began collaborating with Orange Romania on similar agreements in 2023, including a previous vPPA covering 30 GWh. Their joint efforts support ENGIE’s ambition to provide secure and affordable low-carbon energy while helping Orange achieve its #NetCarbonZero goal by 2040.
“We are pleased to support Orange Romania on its journey towards carbon neutrality by providing electricity produced by our renewable energy assets and by ensuring the predictability of energy costs. We want more and more companies to adopt this type of medium and long-term purchase contracts, especially in the current context of volatility, in which securing medium and long-term energy needs can help mitigate risks related to energy prices while contributing, at the same time, to achieving sustainability objectives,” said Nicolas Richard, CEO of ENGIE Romania.
ENGIE operates renewable assets in Romania with a total capacity of 211 MW, including three wind farms and five photovoltaic farms. In 2024, they also expanded their portfolio with a hybrid wind and solar power plant and are commissioning a new solar power plant in Prahova County.
This agreement underscores Orange’s commitment to sustainability, with 93% of its energy consumption sourced from renewables in 2024. It also enhances ENGIE’s leadership in the PPA market, with the company concluding 34 such contracts across six markets and covering solar, onshore, and offshore wind technologies.
“This long-term partnership will significantly contribute to our decarbonisation goals, ensuring that a substantial part of our energy needs come from renewable sources. Orange Romania actively supports the transition to green energy in the region as part of its commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. By investing in green energy solutions, Orange Romania supports adopting green energy for its operations and contributes to strengthening the regional energy ecosystem,” said Julien Ducarroz, CEO of Orange Romania.
