On Thursday, the European Parliament adopted a resolution by a show of hands regarding the respect for human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) strongly condemned the imposition of death sentences in the DRC, including that of Jean-Jacques Wondo, and the serious violations of the right to a fair trial. They called for reforms of DRC’s judicial system.

MEPs expressed deep concern about Wondo’s deteriorating health and called for his immediate release and urgent access to medical treatment. Reiterating their categorical opposition to the death penalty, the Parliament urged the DRC government to reinstate a moratorium on executions and take steps toward the complete abolition of the death penalty. Additionally, MEPs called for systemic reforms to rebuild the judicial system as an independent, fair, and efficient institution that guarantees due process and protects fundamental rights.
