Most leaders of the E.U. understand what is in reality at stake in the war in Ukraine. If Ukraine doesn’t win and liberate the land occupied by the Russian forces, then the entire Europe will be in danger. In addition, to ensure that Russia will not try again to invade an internationally recognised state, Russia and war criminals must face justice.
Kaja Kallas, the Prime Minister of Estonia, is among the most fervent supporters of Ukraine in the E.U. and globally. She also supports the idea of using the Russian frozen assets for the reconstruction of Ukraine.
On January 30, the Estonian PM repeated with a post on X that “We need to press ahead with using # Russia’s frozen assets for #Ukraine”.
“Glad my calls are being met with steps forward not only within the E.U. but also among the G7, including the U.S. Congress and the U.K. Prominent legal and economic scholars have endorsed the idea,” Kallas wrote.
“It is not only morally, but also legally the right thing to do. It is an international legal norm that the aggressor must compensate for damages,” she continued.
For Kallas, using Russia’s frozen assets will demonstrate that any aggression against a sovereign state will have severe consequences.
“Using Russia’s #frozenassets helps Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery – and they need support now. Moreover, it makes the world safer if countries see and believe that they cannot try to conquer their neighbours without losing access to their global reserves”.
Kallas will press her partners during this week’s European Council to act.
“We need to show political leadership. I look forward to discussing next steps with E.U. leaders this week at #EUCO,” the PM posted on X.
