Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has signed a legislative amendment for the ruling party to name the country’s next chief of the Supreme Court. The move has been met with widespread public protests and objections from opposition parties.
As reported by the Reuters news agency, 22 Supreme Court judges have been forced into early retirement. However, chief Judge Malgorzata Gersdorf has rejected the decision, arguing that her constitutional term expires in 2020.
The amendment signed by Duda on July 26 is aimed to make it easier to name the new Supreme Court head.
